Ironically, their appearance makes them one of the most detested insects around here – though they do not bite or sting in any way.  They like to eat many of the same foods we do and are especially troublesome wherever food is prepared or served.  They can also significantly increase asthma symptoms in those with allergies. Bottom line, roach control is a necessity for a clean and healthy home.

Fortunately, cockroaches can be controlled with good pest management and a little knowledge of how to discourage them from moving in with you.

  • Remove food, water, and anything they might like to set up a home in – specifically – cardboard boxes and bags and any type of container which allows them in.
  • Keeping your home as clean as possible is essential to controlling cockroaches. When food or water is hard to find, they must search farther each night to survive which puts stress on cockroach populations and increases the effectiveness of baits and other insecticides.
  • Clean the floors and counters and fix water leaks to remove moisture sources.
  • Seal cracks and crevices where cockroaches hide or enter buildings. Use a good-quality caulk or sealant to close the gaps around sinks and plumbing, in walls, and along kitchen splash guards

Fun Facts:

  • The smell of wet cardboard and paper is delightful to a roach.  They love to live and breed in the dark recesses of closed cardboard boxes and will eat the glue used on both the boxes and bags.  Do not store anything in cardboard boxes or bags! Use plastic bins.
  • Cockroaches don’t need heads to survive.  Why? Surprisingly, its head isn’t all that important to how a cockroach functions. They have open circulatory systems, so as long as the wound clots normally, they aren’t prone to bleeding out. Their respiration occurs via spiracles along the sides of the body. Eventually, the headless cockroach will either dehydrate or succumb to mold.
  • Cockroaches are social creatures, preferring to live in multigenerational nests that can range from a few bugs to several dozen.
  • They lay lots of eggs.  And, Mama roach protects them be enveloping them in a thick protective case called an ootheca.  You’ve probably seen them. German cockroaches encase as many as 40 in one. American roaches average about 14.  We have both of these in Houston.
  • There are over 4,000 species of cockroaches on the planet, most of which inhabit forests, caves, burrows or brush.  Only about 30 species like to live where people do. In the US, the two most common species are the German cockroach and the American Cockroach.  Tropical roaches can boast a wingspan of 7 inches. American Cockroach can grow to be approximately 1.5 inches long.
